An Odd Habit

I've started acquiring odd habits.

For example, this month I kept track of our food waste. A goal of mine is to have as little food shrink as possible, so to challenge myself I made a list to track our progress this month.

In September I threw away:
  • 4 small plums
  • 1/8 container of mint chocolate chip ice cream
  • a loaf of mistake no-meat meatloaf (don't ask)
  • 1/6 container of spinach leaves
  • 1 burnt pancake (oops)
  • 4 slices moldy cheese
  • 1 old advacado
  • 12 very shriveled raspberries
  • 1 peach
  • 1 serving of very gross leftovers (yuck)
It was actually less then I thought it would be. Maybe thinking about what was in the fridge helped me eat things as I noticed they were going bad? Anyway, my plan is to learn about the food we are tossing and try to save money the next time around. Or maybe start composting like my parents and a few of my neighbors?

  1. I've never kept track of what we throw out, though I make using up fresh produce before using anything else up in the fridge to be a big priority. That's why we're going to have salad for dinner tonight. :) We do end up throwing leftovers out occasionally (usually mashed potatoes or some leftover spaghetti sauce that I didn't have noodles for). We give all leftovers that we don't want to eat to our cats because they seemingly eat everything...

  2. i don't think this is an odd habit at all. i think it's great! we actually don't throw out that much because peppy runs by the store on his way home from work at night. that way we just get we need for that evening.

  3. You should try a worm bin! They're super-easy to make, and they eat their weight in vegetation waste (no meat or bones, eggshells are okay) in 24 hours So, two pounds of worms will turn two pounds of scraps into nice rich dirt in ONE DAY. =)

    I have thought a lot about this, but with three kids, I encourage them to eat any leftovers, either for a snack, or for lunch. They are all going through phases where they eat a lot, so lately it hasn't been a major problem. Our only issue is apples. I buy tons. Even with juicing, there are just too many apples! I need to start dehydrating them before they turn!
