Tutorial: Lace Shorts

I spent all morning working on this tutorial, and I LOVE the results!

These shorts are just a tiny bit hard to make, so pay attention dear crafty sisters. You start out with some pre-made shorts (or cutoff pants), and that means you have to maneuver around the pockets (I sewed mine shut a few times) and, of course, the front and back panels. Keep that in mind while sewing! I ended up just hand-basting the lace over the pockets, because my sewing machine does not bend. (you'll see what I mean if you keep reading)
Step One: Cut off some old/worn/ripped and thrifted jeans into cute shorts, at whatever length you desire.
Step Two: Lay a piece of lace over one side. Pin it into place, and lightly cut out the shape your shorts. You do not have to be exact, because we can always trim after sewing it on.
Step Three: Begin sewing at the top. I used a straight stitch for these shorts. If your sewing machine is anything like mine, you will have trouble getting the thick part of the pants under the needle. Just keep working with it! WARNING: DON'T SEW OVER THE POCKET! YOU WILL SEW THE POCKET CLOSED (haha, I did that...<_<) I hand-sewed the tiny bit of lace over the pocket at the end.
Step Four: Starting from the bottom of the shorts, sew up each side, following the seam. Once again, be carful you are not sewing the top of the shorts to the bottom as you sew the lace on. (>_<)
*I did not sew the bottom of the shorts, as that lace was the edge.
Step Five: We are half-way done! Now, lay another piece of lace on the OTHER side, line it up with side one, and repeat from step two.
At The End:Now, take a needle and thread and lightly hand-baste around the top of your shorts near the pockets (unless your sewing machine folds, and is magically able to sew pockets).
Yay! Now you have pretty lace shorts! I styled mine like this:
I was so excited that I promptly made another pair.
I made these in the same way. The only difference is when sewing horizontally, I used a zig-zag stitch to help with stretch!

Happy sewing!

Paisley Purse

Made another purse...
I love the way the fabric lays, but what I like most is the pockets.
I wish my purses could answer the questions in my heart sometimes.

What color purse should I make next? I'm thinking one made completely out of dollies.

Beth

My glorious friend Beth came into town for a visit, and we met up for a little vintage shopping and eclectic photo-shoot!
Here are the pictures I took of her.
She took some awesome pictures of me, and I can't wait to see them :)
(Also, she has some AMAZING hats)

Tutorial: Stain Removal from 100% Silk

The other day I found this amazing 100% silk blazer at my local Goodwill. I immediately fell in love with it. The jacket is the perfect shade of salmon, and is oh-so-soft!
The only downside? It had a terrible sticky stain under the right side.
Well, I thought to myself, its only $3.50...and its silk. So I bought it and thought triumphantly that I'd take care of that nasty little sticky stain at home.

Thus, this tutorial was born--I decided to post it to my blog in case any of you have a lovely silk item that is in need of stain removal.
Step One: Fill your sink with COLD water (do not use warm water, as this will just set the stain further!!) and about a dime sized amount of your favorite soap (make sure it is okay to use on delicate items) I just used hand soap.
Step two: Add about 2-3 tablespoons of white vinegar.
Step three: Let your garment soak for up to five minutes. Don't exceed five!
Step four: Hang the garment up and rub the stain lightly with some sort of bristlely object. I used a old, but clean, toothbrush.
Step five: Leave garment hanging until dry, remove and lightly steam or iron on your silk setting. Then wear it!
I've already found at least three ways to wear my new blazer! How would you guys wear it? I'm thinking next time with some white lace peaking out! Anyway, I hope this tutorial is helpful, and happy stain removing!

California Poppies

Today I planted some California poppies. They are my mothers favorite, so I gave her a pot full also. I purchased all my seeds from this organic seed store. This is the first time I have ever planted anything!

Other then that, I was sort of lazy today.
This is a picture from one of my springtime excursions. I wish I could go back to that day.

So, I wish you good pineapples, my blog-friends, life-friends and ephemeral creatures--may the odds be ever in your favor.

Goodbye, Winter

I came across this idea when spring welcomed me last week.
I decided to say hello to summer and good-bye to fall at the same time.

Some things I have planned for the blog next month:

  • An April Fools Tutorial!
  • Also, How-To dye your hair with henna, step by step
  • And, a giveaway!

Ideas are always welcome :)

Today

Today I am flaunting this empire waist sweater. I kinda love this thing.
At first I was sorta like, half a sweater?
But then I totally rocked it.
This "bohemian sweater" is now in the shop!
